You never know what may come from a chance connection, how a weak-tie relationship that seems superficial or inconsequential can actually have profound importance in your journey.
Take, for example, Dr. Andrew Huberman, Madefor’s Lead Scientific Advisor. He met Madefor Co-founder, Pat Dossett, through his sister, who is friends with Pat’s wife. Both Andrew’s sister and Pat’s wife thought the men should connect, and as luck would have it, they all randomly ended up at the same place one day.
During the brief encounter, Andrew and Pat quickly realized that they wanted to continue the conversation. In fact, four minutes into that conversation, Andrew said, "You're probably going to think this sounds crazy, but I really think you need to come with me to Mexico in two weeks for a study I'm running on fear." Of course, Pat said yes, and two weeks later they found themselves peering over the side of a boat, parked off of Guadalupe Island, looking down at three large great white sharks circling their boat. That story is for another time, but suffice it to say, Andrew and Pat became fast friends, and, soon after, collaborators on what would become Madefor.
If this is the first time you’re hearing about Andrew, it won’t be the last. Dr. Huberman is quickly gaining a following for his new podcast, “The Huberman Lab,” where he discusses science and science-based tools for everyday life. His work, including scientific research on everything from vision, to virtual reality, to breathing, has been published in top journals and magazines, like Time and Discover, and he’s been invited to speak on popular podcasts, like the Rich Roll podcast. Luckily for us, due to the aforementioned chance encounter, this esteemed neuroscientist also happens to be our Lead Advisor.
He’s one of the brains behind our science, and he was instrumental in assembling our team of trusted advisors. If you read Dr. Huberman’s bio, there’s no doubt it’s impressive. He’s a neuroscientist, tenured professor, and principal investigator/head of the Huberman Lab in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has made numerous important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain plasticity, and neural regeneration and repair. You can read his full bio and see our other advisors here, or check out his podcast to learn more about him.
Behind the prestige and accomplishments is a man who is highly skilled in taking complex scientific data and translating it into tangible and beneficial information that everyone can understand and anyone can use to make their lives better. This is his mission.
One thing’s for sure, Dr. Huberman’s talks aren’t your typical science lectures. Our members (and Madefor team) always feel fortunate to hear his perspective; he shows up for our monthly video sessions with members and always blows our minds!
P.S. If you want to sound a little smarter during that next dinner conversation, we encourage you to check out Andrew’s podcast, The Huberman Lab Podcast, where he gives his take on relevant neuroscience topics and how our brain controls our perceptions, our behaviors, and our health. You can also see what he’s up to on Instagram, or listen to his guest appearances on other podcasts, by checking out Madefor In the News.
