4 actions to help improve mental wellness from Madefor's co-founder

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five adults in the US suffers from mental illness. I have not been diagnosed with a mental illness, but I’m also not immune to the compounding effects of stress—running a startup from home, quarantined alongside my wife, 21-month-old twin girls, and new baby boy, has taken its toll.

Get 25% Happier - Reframe the challenges of the past year as a way forward

Dinners with friends are back in your social rotation. School and organized sports are resuming. The pace of life is beginning to speed up again and the variety gives energy to the previously monotonous days.

What. A. Year. So much squeezed into 365 days, that seemed to both fly by and drag on for decades. It was Madefor’s first “official” year; we launched to the public right as the world around us was suddenly coming to a halt. The timing was not ideal, and like everyone else, we were forced to figure out how to carry on in business, and in life.

Campfire Stories - registering wins with our Madefor Community

Register your wins. While always important, we’ve decided to really lean into this theme throughout the month.  Whether you are journaling a daily highlight before bed, texting a friend that you finally finished that project, or silently fist pumping a correct test answer, registering even small wins can have a big impact on your mental health.

The science behind dopamine, the currency of motivation

When Madefor Teammate, KC, thinks about marking small wins, he thinks about a ritual he picked up from a friend before sitting down for his SATs. As a piece of advice, one of his friends recommended that KC give himself a silent “fist pump” every time he knew he absolutely got an answer correct. Every time he confidently filled in a bubble on his answer sheet, he paused briefly to celebrate that moment.

Don't fall prey to the "finish line" mindset

You’ve been through a lot this year. So much, in fact, that it’s easy to fall prey to a “finish line” mindset. It’s the perception that if you can just hang on a little longer—outlast the virus, the storm, the uncertainty—eventually you will cross a finish line and everything will be good again. But, if your happiness depends on the passing of a circumstance beyond your control, then it will always be just out of reach.
